White-tailed deer Essay Example for Free

White-tailed deer Essay Hunting, one of the oldest activities known to man, is being debated by two extremely strong-willed sides. The subject of deer hunting is one topic on which many people have strong emotional opinions either for or against. Some redneck people feel that â€Å"my pa hunted and taught me that if I can kill it, I can eat it†. While the tree huggers feel that â€Å"it is awful because you’re killing Bambi†. Although both are entitled to their own opinion, neither of these reasons comes across as noteworthy enough for a solid case. Do not get me wrong, I am very passionate about the thrills of hunting and will get to that later, but the examples that are most significant to look over are the facts of deer hunting. These imperative facts include the basic ecological population biology and the economic revenues of deer hunting. With all emotional views aside for now, try to look at deer hunting for what it is. It is just a way of leveling out the deer population in place of natural predators. Wolves and mountain lions, the only two true natural predators of adult deer, were basically eradicated from the South-East United States as soon as man settled. This being the case, the only wild animals that pose any sort of threat to deer are coyotes and bobcats, and they are only threatening for a 3-4 month period in young fawns lives. That leaves it up to the humans to keep the populations in balance. If humans did not balance out the deer population, it would be absolutely devastating to the group as a whole. Each ecosystem has a limit to how many organisms of a specific species it can hold. This maximum amount is called the carrying capacity. If the carrying capacity of an ecosystem is surpassed, it is utterly detrimental to the population. This is called overpopulation. Usually, though, the prey species has a predator species to keep the amount in check. This means that the quantity of organisms increases very rapidly until reaching the carrying capacity, and then it levels out. On the other hand, if there are no predators for a species, there is nothing to stop exponential growth. It will soon skyrocket above the carrying capacity thus leading to an inevitable collapse. When a population goes over its carrying capacity, horrifying things happen to the population such as disease and starvation. I personally would rather not be walking in the woods and come across multiple, disease-stricken, hairless deer carcasses that had suffered for months before dying a slow and immensely excruciating death because of its lack of predators. The first time anyone really experimented with deer populations without predators was when Theodore Roosevelt created the Grand Canyon National Game Preserve on the Kaibab Plateau. Here, he ordered all predators of deer to be killed and then banned hunting in the area. He had 4,000 deer placed here and then permitted them to live without restraint while some scientists supervised this process. The total population sprung up to 100,000 and from then on, almost all of them deceased from overpopulation. This is where scientists first began to comprehend the dangers of a lack of predators. One of the main scientists in charge of these observations said, â€Å"The removal of the deers natural predators, which had been done in the interest of preserving the deer population, had allowed the deer to over reproduce, and quickly overwhelm the plateaus resources. †(Kaibab). After learning this, I believe the question that the people who are mad about â€Å"killing Bambi† need to pose to themselves is, â€Å"Would I rather have a small amount of deer killed by people and still get to appreciate the deer that I do see, or would I rather have all the deer killed by disease and there be no more deer around for my children or grandchildren to see? †. As well as hunting being a biological necessity for the deer, it is also a tremendously hefty source for economic revenue. In 2006, the state of Georgia said that it made 1. 8 billion dollars from deer hunting while supplying people with around 15,000 jobs. A typical hunting rifle is around $500. 00 with the scope being an extra $200. 00. That doesn’t even include the ammo people will have to purchase in order to shoot. Deer lockers are also a huge profit in Georgia, as are the appropriate hunting clothes. Also, an average deer processer probably processes around 10,000 deer at $65 per deer. One of the two main profits from hunting, though, is the mandatory hunting licenses. Although they are only $9. 00 for a Georgia in-state resident, they are $135. 00 for out of state people. With the number of travelers who come to Georgia every year for hunting season, these numbers truly add up fast. Because there is so much money made from hunting, it is able to finance a lot of other programs of the Department of Wildlife Resources. A good comparison would be how college football makes so much economic revenue that it pays for most of the other college sports. The other massive economic stimulation as a result of deer hunting are land leases. When farmers are incapable of growing crops anymore for any reason, like old age or droughts, many farmers end up making deals with hunters so they can hunt on the farmer’s unusable soil. This way, the farmers, who would otherwise have land just sitting there with no source of income, would make a much needed profit. If not, the kind, old farmer that always dreamt of letting his kids inherit the plot of land that he spent his whole life on, instead would be forced to sell this stunning terrain to a greedy cooperation and watch them erect a brand new Wal-Mart or Kroger on the land he spent countless hours tending. I’m not sure about you, but I think that I would rather want to allow people to pay the needy farmer to hunt on the land, rather than to watch him reluctantly sell it. Although facts for deer hunting are inevitable, some people still have doubts that deer hunting is good. Some say that it is a very hazardous activity. If that was true, why do you need to pass a rigorous hunting safety course to even obtain your hunting licenses? This was one of many things designed so people could hunt safely, not to even mention the laws they have passed for hunting safety. Some of these laws require you to wear a vibrant orange vest at all times and also deem it highly illegal to have any alcohol in your body while operating weaponry. Also, others may brainlessly argue that people might kill too many deer if hunting is allowed, even though the hunting season is only roughly 80 days out of 365. That’s around twenty-two percent of the days of the whole year. During those eighty days, people are only legally allowed to kill twelve deer total. To the opposing side, this may seem like a colossal amount. In reality though, it is not much at all when you contrast this total to the million-plus deer in this state alone. Also, people might assume that if people don’t hunt them, deer will have happy, fruitful lives in the wild. Unfortunately, if they have no natural predators, it will end badly for them. If people do not hunt deer, they will overpopulate and die. It is just the way biology works. Besides, there is nothing more tranquil then to just take the weight off your feet in the deer stand and to be absorbed by the gripping splendor of nature, all in the flawlessly cool breeze of the early morning. Then when you see the deer approach, you pull the trigger, sending earsplitting sound waves of satisfaction into the silence of the woods, and then beam with the knowledge that, by terminating this one deer, you helped all the other deer in the area live a longer and healthier life. You also know that by killing this animal, you not only saved others from gruesome deaths, but also know that by bringing it home for eating purposes, you are continuing one of the world’s longest lasting human activities.

Sources Of Stress Among Teachers Psychology Essay

Sources Of Stress Among Teachers Psychology Essay Stress is a psycho-physiological process which arises out from the intercommunication of the individual with the environment (Muhammad et al, 2010) and (luthans, 1998) which ends up in disturbances and manifestations depending on the individual characteristics such as health status or psychological process such as attitude (Muhammad et al, 2010).As reported by Ingrid (1997) adapted from Hans Selye (1982), few people would be able to give the definition of stress or even attempt to give a clear cut definition due to the huge number of causes which can contribute to stress. Stress can be defined as a charismatic situation in which a person is affront with an event, constraint or appeal related to what he desires and for which the result is perceived to be both ambiguous and vital (De Cenzo, 1998) whereas Hans selye simply said that stress is the expansive response of the body to any appeal made upon it. It is to be noted that stress can be classified into eutress and distress whereby e ustress is a positive psychological response to a stressor and distress is the negative response (Geraldine, 2011). An example of eustress is an opportunity or a challenge which will lead to a promotion and for distress if any tension, worry or frustration. This study will be focusing mainly on distress. Stress is experienced by nearly all people in their life; however occupational stress is more present in the daily life of worker. As stated by Smith (2000) occupational stress is widespread and can be a major cause of ill health. 2.2 OCCUPATIONAL STRESS Jobs have always been a little stressful however over the last few years the workplace has become increasingly stressful. As per the report of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health 75% of workers believe that todays workers experience more work stress than the prior generation. In 1992, the United Nations in its report even qualified job stress as the 20th century disease (Bob, Rollin, and Bruce, 1997). The World Health Organization (WHO) has characterise job-related stress in countries that are developing as a modern hazard in a traditional working environment and it is not to be forgotten that Mauritius as well is a developing country. Due to the important metamorphosis in company organization, change in nature of work, and technological advances, stress affect employees of all hierarchical level. Work-related stress can be said to be experienced when the appeals from the work environment exceed the employees ability to cope with (or control) them. It is not a disease, but it can lead to problem of ill health in areas like mental and physical health. Occupational stress is a sign of a problem within the organization, not individual weakness (European Agency 2000a, 2002a). It is to be noted that in this study, the term work related stress and the term occupational stress has been used interchangeably however they are distinguished from each other(Health and safety executive,2006) work related stress includes cases where work may have aggravated the stress experienced hence work may be a contributory factor but not necessarily the sole cause whereby the term occupational stress refers to cases where work is the sole cause of the stress experienced and associated symptoms of ill health. The Health and safety executive defined work related stress as the unfavorable reaction people have to increasing pressures or any types of request on them at work. Those reactions, people have to cope with a great number of demands, trying to cope with their duties and responsibilities concerned about their job and they have difficulty in doing so. On an individual level, it is often the fact of not being able to cope with the work load and environment with an associated negative manifestation. In comparison with other professions, teaching is considered as a high stress occupation. (Lambros, 2006) and (Mc and Von, 2005). 2.3 MODELS OF OCCUPATIONAL STRESS A stress model helps to better understand the various stages, and therefore can help people to better cope with the stress. The main model of stress is discussed below: 2.3.1 HANS SELYE MODEL OF STRESS Selye (1977) developed the general adaptation syndrome model .The general adaptation syndrome can be defined as the sum of whole expansive, systemic reactions, of the body which arise due to continuous and prolonged exposure to stress. When a person emits symptoms of not being in good health, it may surely be due to the fact that he is stressed. He identified that stress gather up in the body and if the relevant stressor is not removed, the person body will go through predictable phases as shown in Figure 1. Hans selye talked of three phases: ALARM STAGE This is the stage whereby the body recognize that there is a danger and prepare to deal or not to deal with the threat which is also known as the stressor, this situation is often called the fight or flight response. The stress hormone, adrenaline, is secreted and give the person the energy to fight or flight the stressor. RESISTANCE STAGE In this stage the body tries to return to a situation of psychological tranquility by resisting the alarm due to the fact that the threat still exists. The body remains activated however on a lesser extent than in the alarm stage but sufficient to cause an increase in the metabolic rate and consequently it may enter the third and final stage EXHAUSTION STAGE Exhaustion takes place when one or more target organs shows sign on dysfunction, this happens when the body can no longer meet up with the demand places upon it and start to dysfunction. This is the state whereby a disease is diagnosed which shows that a disease is the consequence of the related stressor. This can result in having serious consequences even death of the organ or the organism as a whole. http://210.9.134.6/zinecmt/templ/aipc/ezineimages/stress.gif Diagram 1: graphical evolution of the three stages of general adaptation syndrome. (Source: Carlson et al,(eds) (2007). Psychology: The Science of Behaviour (6th Ed). Boston, USA: Allyn and Bacon-Pearson) The above theory has been a basis for later research work to be carried out, however there are some issues with it, as it has been carried out on rats, and to extend it to humans may not be that clever, considering the emotional content of the stress perceived which may alter the way a human will react to the stress. Also as the name of the theory state, selye claimed it to be general irrespective of any nature of stress, however different type of stressors may act differently and hence different responses may be observed. 2.3.2 THE PERSON- ENVIRONMENT FIT MODEL The person-environment fit model is one of the well known among others, whereby it lays emphasis on the interaction between the peculiarity of the individual and that of the situation. One important aspect of this interaction is that occupational stress is the extent to which the individual will fit to his working environment, in other words, according to the person-environment fit model , the extent to which the person will face occupational stress depend on how much can he fit the workplace and the demands of the work thereof. Other factors can be motivation, ability and productivity. Â  If the person-environment fit turn out to be wrong, it can cause serious problems in any work environment. Occupational Stress and lack of productivity are natural conflicts related to the fact of a failure between a person fit into their workplace environment. This model can be highly related to occupational stress as it is important for the person to feel his importance in the work place and to fit the working environment so that later on, the problem of occupational stress dont arise, this was confirmed by Edwards and Ship (2007) whereby the study he did confirmed that the misfit between the person and the environment can lead to people having stress. As well as not being able to meet up the demands, the person-environment fit can also failed due to different motives of the individual and the work respectively which will surely lead to occupational stress. Person-environment fit theory argues that stress effects may arise when threatening job demands lead to disequilibrium in the interaction between an individual and the work environment. Although influential, the model is considered to have some drawbacks .There remains confusion over the notion of fit and its measurement (Edwards Cooper, 1990) and also difficulty to conceptualise the notion of fit (Julian and john, 2010) 2.3.3 THE KARASEK DEMANDS- CONTROL MODEL The demand-control model was developed by Karasek in 1979 and it focuses on the job demands and control at a work place situation whereby the employee is faced with a heavy work load/demand and at the same time , is given little control over the work. Hence any job which has a very high demand and very little or simply no control is given to the employee will end up in the employee facing stress, as confirmed by Doi.Y (2005), this is also known as the strain hypothesis. Demands can be in terms of various work activities, such as a close deadline to submit a particular work, too much responsibilities to handle, conflicting roles at work, not having the right to share views in decision making among others and control can also be in terms of the decision making of the employee and the way how he want to carry his job, this model divide the employees in four categories. The first category is the one who have high control over the high demands are known as active employees, second category, those who have high control but low demand, as low strain category of employees. Third category, those with low demands and low control are known as the passive category and finally the one with low control and high demands, as the high strain category (D Overgaard et al, 2004). The most common criticism is that the demand -Control model is too simple. Peter, Arnold B., Ad de (2001) and Johnson (1989) has argued that job control is not the only resource available to coping with job demands and proposed that social support from colleagues or superiors may also function as a mediator of the relationship between job demands and Stress reactions which agrees with the study done by Cristina et al (2012) who said that this model does not apply equally to all individuals and various factors, such as personality can act as a moderator or a buffer. 2.4 TEACHERS STRESS In the field of education, it is not easy to define teachers stress; however Kyriacou (2001) defined the latter as the involvement by a teacher of abhorrent, negative emotions, such as anger, Anxiety, tension, frustration or depression, resulting from some aspect of their work as a teacher. Since the late 1970s, many research work has been done to analyse teacher stress. The wealth of research published over the last years shown that there is a big problem concerning teachers and they do face stress. Compared to other professions, teaching is considered to be high stress occupations (Mc Shane and von Glinow, 2005), which therefore results to higher stress level among teachers consequently leading to poor performance, staff health problems and higher job dissatisfaction (Williams and Gersh, 2004).Occupational stress did had a negative effect on the job performance of the teachers in a secondary school which in turn may result in poor teaching to the students (Mohammad Aklaq et al, 201 0). A survey carried out by Karl Peltzer et all (2008) proved that teachers do have a high level of stress as well as job stress were associated with most stress- relating illnesses such as hypertension, mental distress, tobacco and alcohol abuse which agrees with the study of Wang pei and Zhang Guoli (2008) who deducted from their study that the negative effect of occupational stress on teachers health are significant. Teachers stress can have various consequences therefore it is important to manage it and one way of managing it , is by knowing the sources which stress the teachers most and deal with it directly. 2.5 MANIFESTATIONS OF STRESS AMONG TEACHERS Sign and symptoms of stress among teachers can be seen as manifestations when they face a threshold of stress that they cannot control or deal with. It can differ individually as some may be more prone to certain symptoms than others. Sign and symptoms of stress or those manifestations need to be identified as soon as possible so that it doesnt end up in serious consequences or even fatalities. These can be categorized into three main areas: first of all, the mental symptoms, for example depression and anxiety, secondly, the physical symptoms such as indigestion, palpitations and stomach cramps, and finally the behavioural symptoms which may be in terms of alcohol abuse, using prescription drugs etc. Despite being exposed to same level of stress, secondary school teachers may react differently and have different symptoms to that stressor, some teachers may exhibit depression whereas others may have back ache (leung et al, 2009).Mental symptoms/emotional symptoms tend to be most prese nt and among the first reaction to stress from the teachers. A study carried out in the George region in south Africa showed that teachers stress manifest itself mainly on a mental or emotional level as well as but to a much lesser extent in terms of physical level (M.A.J Olivier, D.J.L and Venter, 2003).In the study carried out by Kyriacou.C and J. Sutcliffe (2011) they found that, the most frequent symptoms of stress reported were tiredness and feeling frustrated 2.6 SOURCES OF STRESS AMONG TEACHERS The sources or causes of stress are also known as stressors. Stressors vary in severity and duration, some situations maybe stressful for everyone but in other situations, individuals may react differently. What is a stressor for a particular individual may not be a stressor for the other one. For some teachers, not being able to cope with the classroom indiscipline maybe a source of stress whereas for others, this may be easily tacked with and not a source of stress hence despite every one of them are teachers; sources of stress may vary from people to people, from organization to organization as well as from situation to situation. Factors such as the mental state of the individual, degree of stress coping, experience of teaching and other demographic variables may play a vital role in deciding if a specific problem can be a cause of stress or not. The research conducted by Brown Ralph (1992) concluded the following most Prevailing work-related factors leading to stress among teac hers, which gave us a better Idea and knowledge on teachers stress: Students-An absence of discipline or disruptive students, students motivation and their respective attitude towards the class and their teachers, the size of the class and their ability to cope and preparing the students for examination purposes. Stressors such as disruptive students may endanger the mental health of the teachers as confirmed by (Nurrul Izzah Abdul Samad et al , 2010) and the national union of teachers in UK(2009) Changes- A lack of information and the necessary resources to smoothen or make changes easier as well as more changes than the demand by the teachers which end up in stress among the teachers. This agrees with the study of kyriacou.(2001) whereby change itself is implicated in teachers stress and could be a problem thereof The management of the school -There is poor cooperation in terms of decision making process and no required training is given to meet the job new demands which keep increasing day by day, an example can be new and latest technological demands, the latter may as well be a potential source of stress for teachers (Olivier and Venter, 2003). Interpersonal relationships- poor social interactions among colleagues and lack of team spirit which may result in interpersonal conflicts. Reviews studies have identified interpersonal conflicts as a major source of teachers stress.( lambros lazuras , 2006) Parents and the community-parents pressure on the teachers to make their children achieve good results and accommodate unrealistic expectations. A study done by G.M steyn and G.D.Kamper (2006) shown that Parents pressure do cause educators to experience stress and the community poses a serious hindrance to learning. Another modern problem nowadays is a particular type of role ambiguity as often the teachers have to nurture, counsel or be mother and father of certain students due to family shift work factors or simply divorce factors.(Nhundu,T,J, 1999) which was confirmed by Joachim Stoeber and Dirk Rennert( 2008). In short, the most common sources of stress for teachers mentioned above are poorly motivated pupils, ill discipline, organizational culture, poor working conditions and poor collegiality. Jarvis (2002) in his critical review of more recent findings on teacher stress focus on three ample causative factors for this: (1) Factors intrinsic to teaching, (e.g., working condition, work under load/overload, repetition and boredom) (2) Cognitive factors which affect the teachers (e.g., time pressures, role conflict and role ambiguity), and (3) Systemic factors operating at the institutional and managerial level (e.g., appraisal system, Non-managerial support, reward system) Holmes (2005) stated that several scholars researching on teachers stress and stress management have categorized some situations that caused stress as follows: (1) Stress resulting from anticipation: fear of whats to come, worry and anxiety. (2) Stress as a response to a current situation: its happening now, and you have to react. (3) Stress from the past: it happened a while ago, but is still lingering in your mind and seemingly impossible to let go. (4) Chronic stress: its an on-going situation, or reaction to a specific event, the impact of which is lingering. Career development can also be a major source of stress (G.M steyn and G.D. kamper, 2006),which agrees with the study done by Ahlam b el shikieri and Hassan A. musa (2012)These can be classified into three main categories namely, job security, performance appraisal and professional training whereby the threat of losing one job is a potential source of stress (M.A.J Olivier and Venter, 2003).Any possibility of demotion may also lead to stress( Rout and Rout,2002).the performance appraisal system can also be a major source of stress for the individual especially if the outcome may influence any promotion or the latter salary.( Rout and Rout, 2002).Required training programme is needed to meet new demands and challenges of the education sector. 2.7 FIMIAN TEACHER STRESS INVENTORY In the present study, we have followed the Fimians teachers stress inventory with minor adaptations to suit the local context in Mauritius. This model explains the teacher stress in a ten factor theory, whereby five consist of sources of occupational stress and the other five about manifestations of stress. According to fimian, when those stressors are present, teachers do have stress and it becomes evident in terms of psychological, behavioural and other type of symptoms. It should thus be possible to identify one array of events that acts as sources of stress and other array of stress that acts as manifestations of stress. Teachers stress is related more to environmental events and the perception of these events, than it is to personal or professional variables such as teacher age, gender, age, education level and number of years of teaching. The factors described in the inventory are time management, work related stressors, professional distress, discipline and motivation, profess ional investment, emotional manifestations, fatigue manifestations, cardiovascular manifestations, gastronomical manifestations and behavioural manifestations. A study carried out by M.A.J Olivier(2003) using the fimian teachers stress inventory concluded that teachers stress manifest itself mainly on an emotional level as well as on a physical level and the most significant source of stress among them was professional investment however the results cannot be generalized as the limited scope of the investigation. In 2009, the study carried out by Victoria sanderlin hand in New Orleans, among novice secondary school teachers, using the fimian teacher stress inventory found that time management, along with discipline and motivation, were the two highest sources of stress for novice teachers moreover Fatigue manifestation and emotional manifestation were the most apparent manifestations of stress, novice secondary teachers may not have those experience to tackle with stress and it may have been different sources or manifestations if they were not novice. Another study carried out by Rubina hanif, Sadaf tariq and Masood nadeem (2011) using the same inventory concluded that teachers shows highest level of stress at work related stressors and fatigue manifestations was the most common one, however this study was carried out in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, and the teachers of Islamabad may not be facing same problem as small town or cities teachers are facing, hence the sample is not well represented. 2.8 SUMMARY OF LITTERATURE REVIEW

Arab and Jewish Conflict Causes

Arab and Jewish Conflict Causes ABSTRACT The clash between Palestinian Arabs and Jews started around the turn of the twentieth century. Despite the fact that these two gatherings have distinctive religions (Palestinians incorporate Muslims, Christians and Druze), religious contrasts are not the reason for the clash. It is basically a battle over area. Until 1948, the region that both gatherings guaranteed was referred to globally as Palestine. Yet after the war of 1948-49, this area was partitioned into three sections: the state of Israel, the West Bank (of the Jordan River) and the Gaza Strip (1). Jewishs claims to this area are focused around the scriptural guarantee to Abraham and his relatives, on the way that this was the chronicled site of the Jewish kingdom of Israel (which was decimated by the Roman Empire), and on Jews requirement for a sanctuary from European hostile to Semitism (2). Palestinian Arabs claims to the area are focused around nonstop habitation in the nation for several years and the way that they spo ke to the demographic dominant part. It depicts the â€Å"clash of civilizations† theory between the East which is still hanging to its historical inheritance and patrimony, and the West which uses its technological and scientific achievements to prove supremacy and legitimacy of spreading his values. Religiously, Jewish Islamic relations have historical roots, which stimulated several religious interpretations, later enhanced by ultra-Orthodox Zionist and Islamic extremists. In this project, I will try to evaluate the role of religion, nationalism and other forces which have triggered the conflict and look at the two prospective of this conflict. Tracing the history of the conflict In the late 19th Century, Jews and Palestinians both began to create a national cognizance and prepared to attain national objectives. Since Jews were spread over the world, the Jewish national development, or Zionist pattern, looked to distinguish a spot where Jews could meet up through the procedure of migration and settlement. In 1897, the first Zionist congress took place at Basle. Its aim was to discuss the ideas of Theodor Herzls 1896 book Der Judenstaat. Later, Basle program was established which supposed to establish a home for the Jews in Palestine Until the start of the twentieth century, most Jews living in Palestine were living in four urban communities with religious hugeness: Jerusalem, Safed, Tiberias and Hebron. The greater part of them watched conventional, standard religious practices. Numerous invested their time considering religious messages and relied on upon the philanthropy of world Jewry for survival. Their connection to the area was religious not national, and they were not included in the Zionist development that started in Europe and were brought to Palestine by migration. Till the start of World War I, Jew population had risen to 60,000. In 1916 the British Commissioner in Egypt, Sir Henry McMahon, had guaranteed the Arabs post-war autonomy for previous Ottoman Arab regions. On the other hand, Sykes-Picot Agreement Britain and France isolated the district under their joint control. In 1917, the British Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour conferred Britain to help the foundation in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish individuals, in a letter to leading Zionist Lord Rothschild. It got to be known as the Balfour Declaration. Arabs were incensed by Britains inability to satisfy its guarantee to make an autonomous Arab state, and numerous restricted British and French controls as an infringement of Arabs entitlement to determination toward oneself. In Palestine, the circumstances were more convoluted due to the British guarantee to backing the formation of a Jewish national home. The increasing European Jewish migration and settlement in Palestine created expanding safety by Palestinian laborers, writers and political figures. They expected that the increase of Jews would lead inevitably to the stronghold of a Jewish state in Palestine. Palestinian Arabs were against the British Mandate in light of the fact that it foiled their aspirations for their rule, and they restricted huge Jewish movement on the grounds that it undermined their position in the nation. In the next 15 years, there was huge influx of Jewish population and around 1 million Jews were living in Palestine in 1936. During this time militant Zionist group Irgun Zvai Leumi carried many attacks on the Palestinian to liberate Palestine and Transjordan using force. In 1937, Lord Peel recommended partitioning of Palestine into Jewish state and Arab state. However it received huge opposition from the Arab representatives. In 1947, Britain which was ruling Palestine since 1920, handed over the matter to United Nations (UN). UN setup a committee which recommended splitting the nation into two parts, Jewish and Arab nations. The plan gave 56.57% land to the one-third of the population of Jews and 43.43% land to the two-third population of Muslims. On 29th November, 1947, 33 members voted for the plan, 13 voted against it and 10 abstained from voting process. However this plan was refused by the Arab representatives. On 14th May 1948, the first Jewish state, State of Israel was proclaimed. The declaration came into effect the next day as the British troops withdrew Soon after the independence, five Arab states attacked Israel including, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Palestine. However due to better military organization and skills, Israel was able to ward off the attack successfully. In 1949, the war between Israel and the Arab states finished with the consent to peace negotiation arrangements. The nation once known as Palestine was currently isolated into three sections, each under an alternate political administration. The limits between them were the 1949 armistice lines (the Green Line). The State of Israel incorporated in excess of 77 percent of the domain. Jordan occupied East Jerusalem and the hill county of the West Bank. Egypt took control of the seaside plain around the city of Gaza (the Gaza Strip). However the tension didn’t finish here. In 1967, The Six Day War took place as a result of mounting tension between the Arab state and Israel. Israel seized Gaza and the Sinai from Egypt in the south and the Golan Heights from Syria in the north. It pushed Jordanian out of the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It also increased the area under Israel’s control as it increased to two times it had previously. Another war took place in 1973, known as the Yom Kippur war. It caused a lot of casualty on both sides and USA and USSR had to intervene to bring the ceasefire agreement. 1970’s saw the rise of Yasser Arafat who led PLO and carried out many attacks, most notably the Munich Olympics in which 11 Israeli athletes were killed. However during the same period, a right wing emerged in Israel which joined hands with Egypt as the Egypt president Anwar Sadat came to Israel in 1977. Israel also returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt that it had seized in 1967 war. In 1983, massacre of hundreds of Palestine refugees by Phalangist, ally of Israelis, was a great shame for the Israeli government. Ariel Sharon, the then defense minister had to resign from his post as inquiry proved that he was unable to avert the massacre. This massacre resulted in Palestinian intifada which started in 1987 against Israeli occupation of land. However a ray of peace was appeared in 1993 when Rabin and Yasser Arafatshook hand at the White house. Since then, various attempts to maintain peace have been made but they have proven to be futile as the extremists have tried to disrupt the peace. In recent occurring, unusually horrific murders of four young men in Hebron and Jerusalem strained the realtion between Israel and Palestine, after which Israel responded violently and bombing in gaza which resulted in deaths of many innocent lives. Concluding with the background of the conflict, the main reason for the conflict appears to be the control over land. However, the conflict over land is not because of controlling the resources or its uses but the religious importance that it carries for both the sects, Jews and Muslims. RELIGIOUS NATIONALISM Religious nationalism as talk and social development is regularly seen as an occurrence of societys self-governance as a wellspring of personality and evaluate, a self-governance showed in the shaping of politicized religious gatherings. It is a slip-up to start an examination of religious nationalism through the social gatherings forming it. From this perspective, religious nationalism turns into a development to safeguard a specific type of gathering character, contrast considered as traits of persons, much the same as that of racial, sexual orientation, sexual or etymological gatherings who dispatch developments to attest or guard their disposition before or from the general publics predominant gathering, here an instrument by which religious individuals secure participation in the political group or distinguishment in people in general circle. Religious nationalism could be seen as one among the panoply of the obviously new social developments, guarding way of life instead of seeking after investment, a substitute or a stand-in for the redistributive material governmental issues of class. Alternately it might be seen as a social refraction, or intercession, of underlying social grievances. These castings of politicized religion are both prefaced on recognizing the social as an instrumental distributional arrangement of things from the social as an expressive arrangement of signs, on understanding the economy as a material institutional request, the paragon of the social, while common society is a typical institutional request, the paragon of the social. Religious nationalism has no political-monetary import; it is an end in itself. Religious nationalism is both social and social. Religious nationalisms are vivified by a family show; they all middle their savage energies on the family, its sensual energies, its gendered request. This is on the grounds that the institutional rationale of religion fixates on the request of creation, finding human- ness in the universe, duplicating cosmology through custom, a reasonable mysticism that fundamentally focuses before life and after death. To decipher religious nationalism, we must tag the significance of nationalism. Nationalism is a state-focused type of aggregate subject development, a manifestation of state representation, one establishing the personality and authenticity of the state in a populace of people who occupy a domain limited by that state. The social shared traits of that populace dont, in themselves, constitute the premise for the creation of a country. Nationality is an unexpected and challenged case, not a social certainty (Brubaker 2000, Smith 1991). Nationalism, the political courses of action composed through the state for the sake of the country, makes the country, not the opposite (Calhoun 1998). Nationalism is a system for the co-constitution of the state and the regionally limited populace in whose name it talks. Nationalism is not philosophy. It is a digressive practice by which the regional personality of a state and the social character of the individuals whose aggregate representation it cl aims are constituted as a solitary institutional reality. Religious nationalism does not change the type of aggregate representation, just its substance, privileging a premise of personality and a paradigm of judgment which cant not be picked. The religious foundation of judgment is, similar to human rights, racial immaculateness, or specialized levelheadedness, past the span of prominent voice or the convincing diversions of the state Religious nationalist constantly focus their energies on the country states in which they live. Indeed activist Islamicists, who have a memorable transnational regional ambit, to be sure a general perfect, and the air conditioner tual custom of the caliphate whereupon to draw, just about all try to make an Islamic request inside the existent country state. In the event that nationalism does not give a determinate premise of aggregate personality, not one or the other do specific manifestations of religion give a determinate premise of legislative issues. Religious nationalism is a type of politicized religion, one in which religion is the premise of political judgment and character, for sure in which governmental issues tackle the nature of a religious commitment. Religious nationalist all read religious messages politically. While it is positively printed, religious nationalism is not inalienably more literalist in its application of its holy messages, nor more absolutist in its ontologies and good objectives, that is, than its common equivalents-communism, majority rule government, nationalism, and modem science, to take four illustrations each of which deliver their own particular hallowed writings, their sacred qualities. To talk about religions section into the general population circle essentially as a manifestation of fundamenta lism is to redirect consideration from the social specificity of its institutional duties. Each religious group, not simply politicized ones, makes specific utilization of their literary custom, tailor their elucidations to the current workload. It is impractical to recognize politicized religious developments from non-politicized ones focused around the degree to which they take after the basics, themselves simply a specific development. The religious distinction between endeavors by Hindus or Jews to control specific bits of challenged region and comparable endeavors by Muslims or American Christians, who are incorporated in the fundamentalist classification, to control the domains they as of now possess escapes me. Both of these fundamentalists look to utilize state force to control components of regional choreography-work hours, film, sustenance consumption, dress-basing their rights to do so in religious cosmology. Religious nationalism represents the return to text, to the fixity of signs, the renarrativization of the nation in a cosmic context. It returns us to bodies and souls, a zone to be defended against things on the one side and beasts on the other. Religious nationalism is literally about reading, the collective plumbing of a text for its timeless truths, as a basis for the narration of contemporary history. Islamic fundamentalists look to the Quranic history of the community founded by Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century as a template by which to gauge and goad the present order. Their Jewish counterparts locate their foundation and telos in the ancient Temple-centered kingdom that was the culmination of Gods territorial promise to Abraham, Moses, and David documented in the Torah. RELIGIOUS NATIONALISM IN ISRAEL Israel has a long history of consolidating religious advancements in its political structure; Jewish religious nationalists, ultraà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ orthodox Jewish political improvements, and Islamists have all participated in choosing administrative issues to moving degrees. We focus on the effects of the joining of the religious nationalists for different accurate and methodological reasons (which we inspect underneath). Not in any way like ultraà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ orthodox Jewry, which for the most part contemplated the Zionist reach out as strange, by the 1930s, the staggering strain inside religious Zionism saw the Zionist stretch out as having significant religious and messianic basics. In like manner, religious Zionism, while holding quick to the conviction that the spot where there is Israel was divinely ensured to the Jewish people, in the meantime favored the state of Israel as the Start of the Redemption and as the harbinger of the Messiah. It envisioned the state as the stage of Gods throne and favored its strongholds, especially the military. The blessedness of the state of Israel was seen as an ontological standard, withdrew from either the individual dedication of its inhabitants or the exercises of its pioneers. Thusly, when considering the probability of provincial concessions, it possessed with a modifying test between two religious targets the estimation of the region and the estimation of the state. In practical terms, this intimated that the relative moderates inside religious Zionism could help territorial concessions if these were seen to benefit the state of Israel. Without a doubt, headed by this wing of the advancement, the National Religious Party (NRP) did so when they underpinned Israels withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip in 1957. While these religious loyalists are still hawkish diverged from the general Israeli masses, the way that they partake in this changing test makes them reasonably administer appeared differently in relation to the radical wing of Jewish religious patriotism. Reflecting the gift of the state likewise especially of the military, one of its pioneers battled that the people who participate in violence against state associations are debasing the name of religious Zionism. They are debasing the weave kippa [skullcap (a picture of religious Zionism)]. Whoever tosses stones at IDF (Israeli Defense Energy) troopers, judgments and wars against the state of Israel is not piece of religious Zionism. The Jewish Home Party adjusted a potential union with the National Union Party on the lates renouncement of any brutality against state establishments and of any affiliation that judgments and puts down the estimation of IDF officers and of the establishments of the state of Israel (the national tune of dedication, the picture of the state, the flag of the state, recognition additionally flexibility days, and the parliamentary and legitimate skeletons). The primary lesson from the knowledge of the Israeli religious patriot development is that the same fundamental instruments (intraà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ party rivalry and the outer political setting) that are expected to prompt balance by the IMH can likewise prompt radicalization, and that such radicalization can happen even in completely democratic contexts.

The Social Effects of Digital Technology :: Technology

Introduction: Digital technology was introduced thanks to numerous technological improvements, which have developed and changed society. As expected Postman (1992), â€Å"a new technology does not add or subtract something. It changes everything.† Digital technology is basically any software using or based on the binary code, a coding system using the binary digits 0 and 1 to represent a letter, digit, or character in a computer or any other electronic device. Both households and businesses use this technology for various purposes, such as entertainment, productivity, communication, etc. To define the actual benefits and negative impacts of digital technology, it first needs to be understood that this technology is mostly a platform, on which have grown numerous innovations. Digital technology is most known for providing society with personal computers and the Worldwide Web. President Clinton, in 1996 during his announcement of the initiative to take Internet to the Next Generation humorous ly said, â€Å"When I took office, only high energy physicists had ever heard of what is called the Worldwide Web†¦ Now, even my cat has its own page.† On the other hand, what was, until recent days, less advertised were the negative effects that digital technology has had on society and mankind since it’s massive implementation. What is induced by this technology, and most importantly, what are the real benefits and effects of digital technology? Negative Effect: A- A study done at the university of Maryland reports the addictive potential of new digitalized technologies (Ipods, cellphones, laptops). College students who gave up all form of technology for 24 hours reported feelings of â€Å"withdrawal and anxiety†, according to an editorial in the Seattle Times. Sociability issues as well as a tendency towards isolation were observed in the tested group. In addition, what is considered even more preoccupying is the â€Å"potential effect so much technology might have on how children develop† (Seattle Times). A study done by Commonsense Media, found that â€Å"52 percent of children ages 5 to 8 years old have had access to a mobile device, while 39 percent of 2 to 4-year-olds and 10 percent of zero to 1-year-olds have had access.† Another research, done by The Kaiser Family Foundation, reports that â€Å"children aged 8 to 18 spend in average 7 hours and 38 minutes using media devices†. An excessive use of modern digital medias is claimed to lead to a sedentary mode of life, less time for social interactions, and more and more within children, obesity.

Humorous Wedding Roast †The Groom’s Odd Behavior this Evening :: Wedding Toasts Roasts Speeches

Humorous Wedding Speech – The Groom’s Odd Behavior this Evening Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen - My name is Ron and I am the best man. Now, you may have heard said that being a best man is like being asked to lead the troops into battle - it's a great honour, but nobody really wants to do it. Well, I only agreed on the condition that it wouldn’t interfere too greatly with my own enjoyment of the wedding day, in particular the free food and drink. But as it happens, I’ve not been able to eat a thing all day - I’ve more than made up for it on the drink front though. Apparently, my main duty is to give you all an introduction to the groom. This part of the best man’s speech is usually just an excuse to demolish the groom’s good character. Now I’ve thought about this and don’t see any reason to break with tradition. But it’s actually not that easy because Larry is a nice fellow; he obeys all local ordinances, he pays his taxes and he keeps the city tidy - so there is not much I can embarrass him with. However, he does have a few quirks! And if you know Larry well you will already be familiar with them. But for those of you on Pamela's side who are just getting to know him - be on the look out for the following ‘odd’ behavior this evening: 1. Jumping on people’s feet – of course, Larry calls it dancing and if it is, he’s perfected the non-rhythm method. The head looks one way; the body another and the feet kick out. I can only liken it to a bad version of ‘Riverdance’. 2. Frowning during photographs – although I must admit he did raise a smile when his picture was taken outside the church this morning. Probably because this is the first wedding he’d been to where he could walk out without putting any money on the plate. 3. Sniffing wine - if you are in his company when he starts doing this be prepared for a discussion on the body, roundness, and smoothness of his tipple. When he starts saying things like ‘multi-layered’ finish’ and lingering complexity, it’s time to make your get away. 4. Vanishing into thin air - there could be three reasons for this. He’s snuck off to watch his beloved team’s first home game of the season.

Freedom of Speech to Criticize Teachers Essay

It is good practice to respect teachers by word and deed. Even so, if a teacher is incompetent, students do not consider it disrespect to badmouth him or her. After all, students’ lives are significantly impacted by the competence or incompetence of their teachers. Thus, Tim Davis, a special education teacher from California who helped to start a website called RateMyTeachers. com supports the site that allows students to either praise or openly criticize their teachers by stating: â€Å"It’s the first time I really feel that students have a voice in their education (â€Å"Teachers Earn An F In Freedom†). † Davis’ opinion is consonant with the freedom of speech theory which grants perfect freedom to all people to express their opinions. The only condition posed by the freedom of speech postulate is that hate speech and verbal abuse are unacceptable in all situations and in all forms. With this essential condition in place, RateMyTeachers. com grants perfect freedom to students to express their positive and negative opinions about their teachers. Many students praise their teachers on the site. However, one teacher was described on the selfsame website as somebody who â€Å"just shows up for a paycheck (â€Å"Teachers Earn An F In Freedom†). † Although a number of teachers have protested against the website because it allows them to be openly criticized by their students, a lawyer representing the New York State United Teachers has observed that the site must surely fall â€Å"under constitutional free-speech protection (â€Å"Teachers Earn An F In Freedom†). † It is clear, therefore, that teachers must be tolerant of the opinions of their students. If the opinions are positive, they should encourage the teachers to focus on their strengths and continue improving their teaching styles. But even if students’ opinions are negative, teachers must show empathy and work on improving themselves with the support of their students’ opinions. After all, students care that their teachers do the best that they can in the classroom. RateMyTeachers. com is an excellent example of the freedom of speech theory in action in this context. Seeing that the opinions of students on the website may be read by anybody with access to the Internet, nothing is hidden from teachers that are truly interested in learning how they are secretly rated by their students. Even without the website, however, students would continue to praise and constructively criticize their teachers. As a matter of fact, students take it in their stride to make good or bad comments about their teachers. Given that this experience is a regular part of schooling, it is worthwhile for teachers to consider allowing all students to provide them with feedback about their teaching methods on a regular basis. Indeed, teachers may want to show respect for their students’ opinions – regardless of whether they are positive or negative – with the understanding that their students’ opinions support them in their quest to improve their teaching styles. What is more, students should be allowed to openly praise or constructively criticize their teachers without having to fill out anonymous evaluation forms. This would also help to build greater rapport between students and teachers. Most importantly, such practice would help students to gain more confidence in their effort to make politically correct speech; and for both students and teachers to learn and grow together, despite the divergency of their developmental stages.
